Conscious Sedation in Implantology

Conscious sedation is a pharmacological technique that induces a state of deep relaxation while keeping the patient conscious and able to respond to verbal stimuli. It is the ideal choice for those who fear the implant procedure.

What it is

Conscious sedation is a pharmacological technique that uses anxiolytics or hypnotics to induce relaxation and analgesia while keeping the patient awake, conscious, with autonomous breathing and intact protective reflexes. The patient experiences the procedure without anxiety or pain but without completely losing consciousness.

Conscious sedation (or aware sedation) is a pharmacological technique that uses anxiolytics, hypnotics or opioids to induce a state of relaxation, anxiety reduction and analgesia, keeping the patient awake and cooperative.

The patient is conscious, breathes autonomously, maintains the protective reflexes of the airways and is able to respond to simple verbal commands. Conscious sedation is not deep sleep: the patient experiences the procedure without anxiety and without pain, but without completely losing consciousness.

How it works

Conscious sedation can be administered orally with benzodiazepines 30-60 minutes before the procedure, simple but less controllable, or intravenously with midazolam or propofol through a cannula, with immediate effect and dosage titratable in real time, ideal for moderate-severe anxiety and complex procedures.

Conscious sedation can be administered in two ways:

Oral sedation

Intravenous sedation (I.V.)

Advantages

The advantages of conscious sedation include absence of anxiety during the procedure, complete analgesia in combination with local anaesthesia, reduction of the gag reflex particularly useful for the upper maxilla, cooperation of the calm and immobile patient, retrograde amnesia that makes the procedure forgotten and rapid recovery in a few hours.

Difference with general anaesthesia

Unlike general anaesthesia, conscious sedation maintains consciousness, autonomous breathing and protective reflexes. It requires only a surgeon and a nurse instead of the complete anaesthesiological team, recovery is 1-2 hours versus 4-8 hours, does not require hospitalisation and has a lower cost.

Use in BSS

The Bilateral Sinus Solution™ (BSS) is performed by the Nicola Lettera Team under conscious sedation as standard. The 4-6 hour procedure per arch is experienced in complete relaxation. The sedation is ideal because it requires cooperation in the delicate phases, the patient must remain immobile during the passage through the tuber and sphenoid and the rapid recovery allows immediate loading in 24-48 hours.

The Bilateral Sinus Solution™ (BSS) is performed by the Nicola Lettera Maxillofacial Team under conscious sedation as standard. The procedure, which lasts about 4-6 hours for a complete arch, is experienced by the patient in a state of complete relaxation.

Conscious sedation is particularly suitable for BSS for several reasons:
